First complete and first hardcover edition, first printing. Signed by the author. Inscribed to fellow science fiction author and critic Brian Stapleford. Publisher's original red cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth and gilt bright and fresh. The contents, with some spotting to the text block edge, are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with lightly rubbed dustwrapper that has a few marks to the rear panel and is without fading, loss or tears. Not price-clipped (25/- net printed to the lower front flap, with a retailers £1.25 price label over the top).

Inscribed by the author in black ink on the title page "To Brian Stapleford / from / Samuel R. Delany / Oslo / '89". Delany's first novel, written when he was nineteen, and first published in an abridged form in 1962 as an Ace Double paperback original. This first UK edition was the first appearance of the complete novel, and the first edition in hardcover.
