THE ECONOMY OF BEAUTY; in a Series of Fables: Addressed to the Ladies.

Mixed edition, two parts in one volume (the first part being a second edition, the second part being a first edition). Early twentieth-century half blue morocco over blue cloth boards, the spine with five gilt-ruled raised bands and titles in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Illustrated with 10 engravings by George Bickham and others to the second part. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little rubbing to the extremities. The contents with cracking to the front hinge, a contemporary owner's ink inscription ("Mrs Jean Stevenson / from her affectionate husband / [?]Stevenson MD") to the head of the first title page, some occasional light scattered foxing and the odd mark and nick to page margins are otherwise in very good order throughout.

A collection of poetic fables addressed to the female sex, based upon those of De La Motte, and dedicated to Princess Charlotte. The work includes sections regarding beauty, education, domestic life, motherhood and fashion, amongst much else, accompanied by a series of charming anthropomorphic engravings by George Bickham.
