First edition thus. Deluxe edition, one of 22 copies. Folio. Publisher's black morocco backed red cloth boards illustrated in black. Red ribbon page marker. Illustrated with wood engravings, full page and throughout the text by Lynd Ward. A fine copy, the binding square and firm, bright and fresh. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owners' marks. With a separate black cloth portfolio containing the complete suite of lose wood engravings by Lynd Ward, in fine condition. Both volumes housed in the publisher's black leather solander case with titles in gilt to the spine. The case, whilst a little rubbed and scuffed to the surface edges of the soft leather, remains in very good, structurally sound condition.
Issued in a deluxe edition of just 22 copies, this example is numbered XV and signed by Patrick McGrath in black ink on the colophon of the book. The fifth Centipede Press publication. The book alone, without the extra suite of wood-engravings and large solander box, was also issued in an edition of 500 copies. Lynd Ward's illustrations for Mary Shelley's masterpiece of gothic horror and science fiction were first published in 1934 by Harrison Smith and Robert Haas, New York.
