THE ANTARCTIC REGIONS

First edition, first printing. Publisher's original red cloth with a gilt vignette depicting a ship at sail amongst the ice to the upper board and titles in gilt to the upper board and spine. Fore-edge and bottom edge untrimmed, some pages unopened. Illustrated with numerous black and white plates, in-text illustrations and several maps, including one folding colour map of the South Pole. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a few minor marks to the boards and a little fading to the spine. The contents with the attractive bookplate of Jerome A. Hart depicting a Viking longboat flanked by mermaids to the front pastedown, a little toning to the endpapers and some light dots of foxing to the edges of the textblock are otherwise clean and bright throughout. The folding map remains in excellent condition with no tears or damage. A lovely copy.

A thorough and well-illustrated account of the history of Antarctic exploration, geography and climate, issued with the "purpose of rousing and stimulating interest in enterprises that specially appeal to British readers" on the eve of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's 'Discovery Expedition' of 1901-04.
