"New edition". Large 8vo. Publisher's original green cloth with titles in gilt to the spine and within a gilt decorative device incorporating a lion, ostrich, narwhal, snake, fish and bat to the upper board. Illustrated with 40 hand-coloured plates (including 30 by Thomas Landseer), 4 monotints, and over 160 line illustrations within the text. With additional engraved title page incorporating a portrait vignette. A very good copy, the binding square and secure with cracking to the front inner-hinge and between pp.80-81 (but all still holding well), a little wear to the spine ends and edges and to the corners of the boards. The contents with occasional foxing, a few unopened gatherings with small tears to a handful of page edges, a minor mark to the frontispiece, and creasing to some tissue-guards, are otherwise in good order and remain free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. The plates remain clean and bright.
A wonderfully illustrated nineteenth-century popular natural history book based upon the work of the renowned French naturalist Georges Cuvier. Scarce in the original cloth and with the plates in such lovely condition.
