First published in 1999 by Tartarus Press in a limited edition of 250 numbered copies. A collection of eight ghost stories written by F. Marion Crawford, comprising of 'The Dead Smile', 'The Screaming Skull', 'Man Overboard!', 'For the Blood is the Life', 'The Upper Berth', 'By the Waters of Paradise', 'The Doll's Ghost' and 'The King's Messenger'. The volume also contains the complete literary output of Crawford's eldest sister Anne (Countess von Rabe), 'A Mystery of the Campagna' and 'A Shadow on a Wave', both written under the pseudonym of Von Degen. A further tale, 'A Were-Wolf of the Campagna', was written by Crawford's other sister Mary, under the pseudonym of Mrs Hugh Fraser.
