First edition, first printing. Publisher's original blueish green cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. Illustrated with ink wash drawings by Quentin Blake throughout. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, with a little softening to the spine tips and corners. The contents, with the unavoidable toning of the paper stock, are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the very good, rubbed, nicked and creased dustwrapper, which has some laminate peel to the head of the spine and tip of the rear flap fold, a small puncture to the middle of the rear spine fold and a touch of fading to the spine. Not price-clipped (£6.50 to the front flap).
Winner of the 1983 Whitbread Prize for Children's Book of the Year and the subject of two film adaptations; the first, a Jim Henson production in 1990 directed by Nicolas Roeg, starring Anjelica Huston and Rowan Atkinson; the second in 2020 directed by Robert Zemeckis starring Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci and Kristin Chenoweth.
