First Paris edition, first printing. Publisher's original cream quarter cloth and patterned paper covered boards, in the M. Kahane illustrated first state dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, bright and fresh, with some shelfwear rubbing to the bottom edge of the boards. The contents, with some spotting to the endpapers, are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. The closed text block edge is somewhat toned and marked. Complete with the good, rubbed, nicked and toned dustwrapper the has several tears (secured with tape to the underside), and small chips to the spine tips, upper edge of the rear panel and corners. The underside of the dustwrapper has a name in pencil to the upper edge of the rear panel. Publisher's original [first state] price of 100 Fr net is present to the spine. Uncommon in the dustwrapper.

The author's first book. Originally to be published in London on 21 February 1929 by the Scholartis Press, the novel was deemed obscene by the authorities prior to publication, the publisher prosecuted at Bow Street Magistrate's Court and all but a handful of advance copies destroyed. This Paris printing, the first obtainable edition, was produced by Jack Kahane in April of the same year. It was the first of the banned English books that he published in Paris. Its publication preceded the creation of Obelisk Press by two years.
