First edition, first printing. Publisher's original quarter blue cloth and blue paper covered board with gilt title to the spine. A near fine copy, the binding square and tight with a little bumping and rubbing to the spine tips and some fading to the top edge of the upper board. The contents, with a light toning to the front free endpaper, are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps.

Selected and translated by Frank Montagu Rundall (1851-1930), a British colonial military officer born in India. Rundall served in the Indian Staff Corps and took part in British military campaigns in Burma, the Chin Hills, Waziristan, and China, eventually retiring with the rank of colonel. He also developed a scholarly interest in Asian languages and published works on the Chin languages. His translations of Hafez are notably poetic and mystical in character, favouring literary expression and spiritual interpretation over strict philological literalness. A second edition was issued by Stuart and Watkins in 1970.
