ORIGINAL SIGNED AND DATED CLAPPER BOARD USED IN THE PRODUCTION OF 'TYSTNADEN' [THE SILENCE]

Constructed out of wood, painted black and white with brass hinge and spring [clapper] mechanism. The plate measures 15 x 18.5cm, the handle 33cm in length. With the code L143 painted within a white grid on both sides. In very good condition with some wear to the edges consistent with use but structurally sound and in full working order. Housed in a modern black cloth solander case.

One side of the clapper board has been signed in white ink by Ingmar Bergman with the date 31.7.63 underneath. The Swedish director, dramatist and filmmaker Ernst Ingmar Bergman (14 July 1918 – 30 July 2007) was an undisputed colossus of world art cinema whose dark imagery explored the ambivalences of life, death, doubt and relationships. Between his debut in 1941 and retirement in 2003, Bergman wrote or directed more than 60 films and 170 theatre productions. 'Tystnaden' [English title: The Silence] is the third in a series of thematically related films, following 'Through a Glass Darkly' (1961) and 'Winter Light' (1963). The film was submitted to the film rating / censorship board (Biografbyrån) of Sweden in July 1963 and went through without the demand for any cuts (unlike most international releases that run 10 minutes shorter). On its September release in Sweden, the number of brief but controversial sex scenes and strong language led to intense public controversy. Against the expectations of the filmmakers, it was a box-office hit and won the award for Best Film at the 1st Guldbagge Awards. The film has been classified as a "landmark of modernist cinema". Provence: From the collection of Swedish film director and screenwriter Lars-Magnus Lindgren.
