THE PURITAN'S GRAVE

First edition, first printing. Three volumes. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Black morocco labels with titles in gilt to the spines. A very good set, the bindings square and firm with a little cracking to the front inner hinges, some chipping to the title labels and to the spine ends of volumes one and two, and rubbing to the extremities. The contents with the armorial bookplate of the Earl of Cork and Orrery to the front pastedown of each volume, a contemporary signature to the head of the title page of volume one, the odd mark to page margins and light scattered foxing are otherwise in good order.

A moral novel by William Pitt Scargill (1787–1836), the Unitarian minister and writer. An uncommon title. Provenance: from the library of Martin Stone.
