Two delicately rendered sepia pen and ink drawings, one of a girl playing with a ball, the other of a girl holding bunches of flowers, each with a background of hills and flowers. The girls' dresses and bonnets are beautifully and minutely detailed, adorned with tiny ruffles and bows. Each 12.4 x 7.3 cm, signed 'KG' to the lower left corner. Mounted, framed and glazed.
Kate Greenaway's naturalistic, pastoral illustrations featuring detailed historical costumes (Greenaway's mother was a dressmaker) were so popular during her lifetime that they helped to shape the contemporary, fashionable ideas of an arts and crafts childhood. Her legacy in children's illustration endures today, with one of the most prestigious illustration awards still bearing her name.
