First edition, first printing. Complete in six volumes, five of which are signed by the author. Publisher's original red cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. Volumes II-VI top edge black. Illustrated with photographs in black and white throughout. A near fine set, the bindings square and firm, the cloth and gilt bright and fresh. Volume I with a previous owner's inscription at the head of the title page. The contents are otherwise clean throughout all six volumes. Complete with the original rubbed, nicked and creased dustwrappers, that remain without loss or large tears, volumes I and III are price-clipped.

A protégé of Winston Churchill, Macmillan served as the Foreign Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer under Anthony Eden, succeeding him as the Leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister 1957-1963.
