Two of my favourite recently acquired and catalogued items are art related. The first is an early artists book by the multi-award winning sculptor and conceptual artist Richard Long. 'River Avon Book' (1979) is notably the first presentation of his mud paintings, a technique and medium to which the artist frequently returns. Limited to 106 copies, each book is unique. The second item is a wonderfully energetic painting by the prolific motoring artist Bryan De Grineau. The gouache on artists board depicts a Napier-Railton at full throttle during the night stage of the World 24-Hour Record attempt at Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Likely John Cobb is behind the wheel, who along with co-drivers Charles Dodson and R. E. Rose-Richards broke twenty speed records during their time at Bonneville in 1935 (the year of this painting).

Other highlights include the 1742 first Jarvis [Jervas] translation of Don Quixote, Iris Murdoch's debut novel Under The Net in a bright example of the dustwrapper and the 1969 first edition of A Treasury of Yiddish Poetry in an exquisite 1971 binding by José Galván Rodriguez (Galvan Bindery, Cadiz). We also offer a decent selection of science fiction and books signed by David Hockney, Haruki Murakami, David McKee and Lady Pamela Hicks.(nee Mountbatten).

Further details and images of any item are available on request or by clicking through to the website.
Thanks as always for looking.
With best wishes,
James and the Lucius Books team.

Published between 1995 and 2004, this definitive edition of Charlotte Brontë's letters, meticulously edited by Margaret Smith, spans the author's life from the age of thirteen to her death at the age of thirty-eight. It brings to light many previously unseen letters and offers accurate, unexpurgated and correctly dated versions of many others. As Angela Leighton wrote in her review in the TLS, "Smith has not only produced a reference work to which all Brontë scholars will turn; she has also produced the nearest thing to an autobiography by an author who resisted 'drivelling confessions'". Each of the three substantial volumes is generously introduced, annotated, and includes a selection of plates reproducing examples of the letters in manuscript and portraits of some of the featured correspondents.

[...] It's blackly, bleakly, wonderfully funny".

First edition of the Jervas translation. Two volumes. Contemporary mottled calf, five raised bands, gilt decorated compartments, titles in gilt to the spine. Bound with: 'The life of Michael de Cervantes Saavedra. Written by Don Gregorio Mayáns and Sisár' (the first English translation 1738); 'A supplement to the translator's preface' more commonly know as 'A dissertation on the origin of books of chivalry' by William Warburton; 'Advertisment concerning the Prints' by John Oldfield. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 67 copper plates engraved by Gerard van der Gucht from drawings by John Vanderbank and an additional frontispiece engraved by George Virtue after a drawing by G. Kent. Decorative head and tail pieces and initial letters. The bindings are square and firm with minor surface wear to the boards and corners. The original spines laid down and refurbished at the joints and tips. The contents, with near paper strengthening to the inner hinge of volume I, light browning to the margins and a short closed tear to the fore-edge of one plate, are otherwise in good order throughout.

An attractive example of the first edition of this esteemed translation. Jervas (1675-1739), consistently misspelled on editions of his translation as 'Jarvis', was a portrait painter and translator. "Jervas entered the literary circle of Addison, Pope, and Swift, setting up his home and studio in London in Cleveland Court, Westminster. He was hailed by Richard Steele in The Tatler of 16 April 1709 a 'the last great painter Italy has sent to us' ... As well as literary friends, Jervas also had an influential patron in the prime minister Sir Robert Walpole. Jervas played an important role in acquiring works of art for Walpole's ever expanding collection, as well as contributing his own portraits ... His major literary undertaking was an English translation of Cervantes' Don Quixote. Published posthumously in 1742 and frequently reprinted, it is generally acknowledged as being close in spirit to the original" – ODNB. (ESTC T59882; ESTC T98502)

A fine copy, the binding square and tight with a touch of fading to the spine panel. The slipcase is fine and structurally sound. A superb example of this early artists book by the multi-award winning sculptor and conceptual artist Richard Long, notably the first presentation of his mud paintings, a technique and medium to which the artist frequently returns.

"I think the first mud work on paper was River Avon Book of 1979, where I had the idea to make this book with the pages dipped in muddy water. So I got all these sheets, quite big sheets, and after they had been dipped in the muddy water they were cut down and bound into these books. That was the first time I used paper with mud on it." - Richard Long (Elliott, 2006). Long is the only artist to have been short-listed four times for the Turner Prize. He was nominated in 1984, 1987 and 1988, and then won the award in 1989 for White Water Line. The intended print-run of the River Avon Book was 120 copies although only 106 were produced. The book is rare in commerce, with not a single copy recorded at auction (rarebookhub). Most copies are held in institutional collections including the Tate Gallery, London; Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh. (Fuchs, R. Author / Artist: POTTER, Beatrix
Publisher: London: Frederick Warne, 1906

First edition, second issue (with "New York & London" on the rear cover). Publisher's original green cloth wallet with pictorial paper onlay, titles and decoration in dark blue, enclosing concertina-style folding plates featuring 14 colour illustrations by the author. A better than very good copy, the binding firm with a little rubbing to the extremities, the tab, heightened in silver, is still present and firm. The contents, with light crease to the far edge of the first fold (not affecting illustration) are otherwise clean and bright and sound throughout. An excellent example, in entirely original condition of this fragile Beatrix Potter first edition.

Frederick Warne, in 1906 produced two books by Beatrix Potter in this panoramic form: The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit and The Story of Miss Moppet. The fragile nature of the binding meant that the books were easily damaged on inspection by potential purchasers, the result being (by the author's account) "the shops sensibly refused to stock them because they got unrolled and so bad to fold up again" (Linder). The panoramic design was discontinued and in 1916 the book re-issued in the uniform format of the rest of the series. (Leslie Linder: A History of the Writings of Beatrix Potter, pp. 183 and 426).

Freya Stark's complete autobiography. Stark (1893-1993) was an English explorer and travel writer who undertook her first expedition in 1927 when, due to Lebanon and Syria being under a repressive French regime which did not allow travel in the region, she travelled in secret (moving only at night and through the countryside) by donkey through Lebanon. A few years later she became the first westerner to explore certain remote parts of the Iranian wilderness, and in 1934 travelled to the Hadhramaut. During World War II she was employed by the British Ministry of Information and was posted in Yemen, Egypt, Iraq, and Palestine. Following the war she resumed her explorations, was made a Dame in 1972, and travelled widely all the way into old age; at the age of 89 she was filmed by the BBC riding into the Himalayas on a mule. She wrote of her travels prolifically from 1934 to 1988.

Strachey came from a liberal, artistic family which had close ties with the Bloomsbury group. She campaigned and wrote extensively on women's suffrage, and later stood as an independent for Brentford and Chiswick for three general elections before becoming the parliamentary secretary for the UK's first female MP, Nancy Astor, and then the head of the Women's Employment Federation. Her papers are held at The Women's Library at the London School of Economics. "While acknowledging in a limited way the importance of the militants, [the book] established a version of the suffrage movement that endorsed the views and celebrated the role of Millicent Fawcett and the NUWSS" (ODNB).
