First editions. Two volumes. Publisher’s original red cloth with gilt titles and illustration. Top edge gilt. Original green coated endpapers to each volume with the Burn bindery ticket to the rear pastedown. With the bookplate of Republican senator Boise Penrose (1860–1921), Pennsylvania to the pastedown of each volume. Illustrated throughout by John Tenniel. A VERY GOOD attractive set in entirely original condition. Alice shows a little rubbing and light marking to the boards, the hinge slightly cracked at rear endpaper. Generally clean with a little spotting and fingermarks throughout. Through the Looking Glass is rubbed to the binding with a little more marking to the boards than Alice. The contents are clean within and without inscriptions or stamps. Hinges cracked to the front and rear hinge at endpapers. Each volume with a cloth dustwrapper and housed in an early 20th century purpose made half morocco slipcase.
