Title: SMITH OF WOOTTON MAJOR view larger image
Author/ Artist Tolkien, J. R. R. (Illustrated by Pauline Baynes):
Publisher/ printer: London: George Allen and Unwin. 1967
Price: £4,750.00
Description: First edition, first printing. INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPY. Original pictorial paper covered boards. No dustwrapper issued. A VERY GOOD copy, the board edges with a little rubbing but no loss. The contents are clean, complete and bright. Inscribed in black ink to the half title “Joy Hill from J. R. R. Tolkien”. An exceptional association copy, Joy Hill was Tolkien’s private secretary on behalf of his publisher George Allen and Unwin. Throughout the 1960s she handled much of the fan mail Tolkien received. They had a very close working relationship, so much so that in 1966 Tolkien dedicated and presented the poem Bilbo's Last Song as a gift to her. The poem was illustrated by Pauline Baynes, and published as a poster in 1974 but it was not until 1990 the text was finally published in book form, reillustrated by Baynes.
